2013 National Health Interview Survey

1. The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is recognized as an important method for monitoring the current status and trends of national health. In Taiwan, the NHIS, conducted once every four years, has completed four rounds of surveys in 2001, 2005, 2009, and 2013. In 2001, in view of the increasingly serious trend of illegal drug and substance abuse both domestically and internationally, and considering its adverse health effects, questions on drugs and other addictive substances were added for the first time in 2005, expanding the survey into the "National Health Interview and Drug Abuse Survey." Also starting in 2005, the sampling unit changed from the household to the individual; the 2009 survey first introduced "optional modules" and the "Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) system," increasing the convenience of face-to-face interviews, data-entry efficiency, and data quality. 2. This survey mainly continues the data-collection model established since 2009, using computer-assisted methods for community face-to-face interviews and self-administered questionnaires, and builds on the computer-assisted survey information system developed for the 2013 survey, with system enhancements, new features, and corrections, applied to this community health survey. The 2017 NHIS content is divided into six major sections: personal basic information, personal health status, accidental injury and personal health behavior, disease-prevention knowledge and medical-service utilization, EQ-5D/CES-D/MMSE scales, and work and economic status, along with supplementary modules covering "mental health (CES-D scale)," "self-perceived health status (SF-36)," "well-being," "degree of acceptance of traditional Chinese medicine resources," "Chinese version of health literacy (HLS-EU)," and "health literacy - healthcare setting version," among others.
